It is about ten years ago that I first heard of Christian Science. At that time I was called upon to help maintain order on account of a general strike, and I returned home with high fever.
The doctor diagnosed the trouble as grippe. I notified my sister that I was ill, hoping she might be able to nurse me. When she received the news she went immediately to a Christian Science practitioner and had help. During the night the fever suddenly left me, and when my sister came the following day to nurse me I was well again, so that she was able to leave on one of the next trains. Before she left, she remarked that my healing had not taken place accidentally, but that I owed it to Christian Science. As I had no understanding whatever of metaphysical healing, I could not believe in such a possibility, and was satisfied with the healing without investigating it. Evidently the time had not yet arrived for my way to be directed into the promised land of Christian Science, although I was standing at its portals.
At the time I had religious instruction I had the opportunity to memorize many of the most beautiful Bible texts, and of these the admonition of our Master, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," often came to thought. But what is truth? I repeatedly asked myself, without finding a satisfactory answer. The answer came to me a few years later in all its clarity, although in a way I had never dreamed of. In other words, the Science of being was revealed to me.
