In the fall of 1918 our family of four fell victims of an epidemic. Our case to mortal sense grew serious, and our family physician showed deep concern. It was in this moment of extremity that Christian Science came to us, with results so marvelous that the experience will always remain a signpost on our journey. My own healing was of pneumonia, the painful evidence of which vanished overnight, leaving me with the blessed assurance that God and His Word are real and good, as I had always longed to believe.
Once again we called a doctor to our home, the occasion being the lodging of an open safety pin in the throat of our youngest child. Before the doctor arrived, a student of Christian Science came to me with loving reassurance, and soon had the child free, laughing, and happy. An examination revealed a slight scratch where the pin had been lodged. With the help of this dear neighbor fear was quieted, and the situation left with God.
Since then each trial has been but the occasion for further abandoning old beliefs. I cannot express the deep gratitude I feel for the loving help of a practitioner when needed, particularly at the time of the birth of our third child. Unable to think of childbirth in aught but terms of pain, I was lovingly reassured that all that was required of me was obedience. And in due time the child was born, with neither moan nor tear, but with perfect calm a sense of support and strength, in contrast to two former births, where the kindliest of medical ministrations had been my reliance.
