Daily Times

My attention has been drawn to a contributed article in a recent issue of the Bundaberg Daily Times, in which the works of Mary Baker Eddy are said to be contrary to the Bible. It is there stated that after perusal of a few pages it would be foolish for the truth-seeker to read volumes of such literature, as Mrs. Eddy emphasizes the immortality of the soul, that there is no death, and that God is not a person.

Mrs. Eddy does emphasizes the immortality to Soul where is intended the deific meaning only, and the immortality of the man of God's creating. But nowhere in any of her writings does she uphold the immortality of soul when is meant material sense, which sins and is the meaning of Ezekiel 18:4, "The soul that sinneth, it shall die." Animality, including sin, lust, sensuality, dishonesty, false appetite, et cetera, as opposed to spirituality, has not one God-quality, and must pay the wages of sin, which is death. But the sinner who reaches out to be saved from the evil that results in death is not without hope: God's promise is that God will restore his soul (spiritual sense), and through regeneration the sinner gains his true immortal selfhood and finds that "the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

It is quite correct to say that Christian Scientists do not say "God is 'a' person; or 'a' principle." The article "a" has no place in the recognition of God as the only One. Christian Science stresses the fact that God is incorporeal, is infinite Person; that He is divine Principle in that He is the only cause and creator. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says (p. 302): "God is Love. He is therefore the divine, infinite Principle, called Person or God."
