I became interested in Christian Science when about fourteen...
I became interested in Christian Science when about fourteen years of age, after a wonderful healing of my eldest sister, which convinced me that the teaching of Christian Science is true.
My first healing was of a skin disease which seemed to manifest itself in large black blotches on my body. It came very gradually, and at first did not cause much discomfort, but in a couple of weeks the trouble had developed until my mother became alarmed and said something must be done, either through materia medica or through Christian Science treatment. I had never been in very good health and had been under the doctors' care a good deal, so I told my mother I wished to try Christian Science for this trouble. I wrote to a practitioner in a near-by city, and he gladly accepted my case and wrote me some very encouraging letters. Being young in Science I did not realize I should do my part in studying, so I did not notice any improvement at first; in fact, the condition seemed to grow worse. By this time fear was trying to creep in, and this caused me to reach out more eagerly for help, with the result that I was completely healed in two more treatments, the manifestation disappearing overnight.
Another healing which will always stand out in my memory was also in my early years of Christian Science. I was taken very suddenly ill with kidney trouble. We were living on a farm nine miles from town and had no telephone; so I asked my sister to read to me from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which she willingly did. There had been no action from the kidneys for at least twenty-four hours, and I was unable to move in bed, so my sister read aloud far into the night; but the pain seemed so intense I could not listen. I remember putting my hand on my back and thinking there must be something terribly wrong to cause so much suffering. Just then a sentence was read which caused me to think, God governs me, and yet I am believing that something is wrong with His government. Instantly all pain left me, and I slept perfectly for the remainder of the night. I did my usual work the next day without even a trace of soreness. In Science and Health we read on page 417, "To the Christian Science healer, sickness is a dream from which the patient needs to be awakened." It was indeed like awakening from a bad dream to find it all a lie.
