The Rules of Mind-Healing

In "Retrospection and Introspection" (p. 78) our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes, "The rules of Mind-healing are wholly Christlike and spiritual." The Christian Scientist knows that physics and metaphysics are opposites, and that the wholly Christlike and spiritual rules of Mind-healing require one to make his choice between drugs and Deity, between the fallible and the infallible.

The Master said, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." The life-giving, health-giving Word of God is the same in all ages; therefore this healing Word is with humanity to-day. "He sent his word, and healed them." Can God, Spirit, require the cooperation of matter?

Some may wonder why one should not combine the care of a physician with the treatment given by a Christian Science practitioner; why prayer should not minister to the mind of a patient while the physician cares for his body. In reply to this, Christian Science teaches that sickness is just as mental a condition as is sorrow; and who would call in the aid of medicine to heal a sorrow? The sense of sorrow or of sickness, or whatever the mental condition of the moment may be, is quiescent during sleep, but returns in full force directly a mortal consciously, and often anxiously, resumes the beliefs of evil and physicality. Spiritual awakening alone draws one nearer to God, to the truth of his being.
