During the summer of 1920 I was in Montana, visiting my daughter. On one occasion I was helping her husband to finish an attic chamber in their new ranch house when I slipped and fell, striking my breastbone across a floor beam. Then I fell between the beams and through a temporary ceiling down on to the kitchen floor. My son-in-law went to the ground floor and helped me to my feet. I thought I was all right with the exception of a discomfort at my breast, but the next day found I could not lift my arms above the horizontal.
After a week or more of discomfort and worry over the audible grating when I tried to raise my arms, I consulted a physician in Helena, ten miles from the ranch. Having to wait an hour before he could give me his attention, I called upon a Christian Science practitioner, more to see what she would say than with faith that a broken bone could be healed by Science treatment. By tilting my head I was able to remove my hat as I entered her office.
I related the accident to her and also told her that I had arranged to go to a physician at a certain hour. She made no particular comment, except to say that I was at liberty to keep my engagement with the physician, although it would be unnecessary. She then asked that we engage for a few minutes in silent prayer. While so engaged the healing came. In the outer hall I remembered that unconsciously I put on my hat and then, as I left her office, I raised my hand and lifted my hat in the usual way without any twinge or effort. I went right to the physician and was thoroughly examined; after which he declared that the bone had been badly fractured, but that it had knitted beautifully.
