In gratitude and appreciation of the blessings we have...
In gratitude and appreciation of the blessings we have received since taking up the study of Christian Science, I should like to tell of some of the healings in our home. For eighteen or nineteen years prior to taking up Christian Science I had stomach trouble. I had consulted many physicians from time to time, but continued to get worse with each and every attack. The last physician was consulted while I was working for a large mine and milling company. After doctors at the mills had prescribed different medicines for several months, I was sent to the company doctor's office in the city where five of the best physicians in this state practiced. After a thorough examination the doctors told me of the conditions that seemed to exist, and said they did not know of anything they could do for me. I went on for about eight months, and then my wife asked why I did not try Christian Science. I thought over the question and read the literature for a few days, and then decided to give it a trial. A practitioner was asked to take up the work, and all so-called material remedies were destroyed. From the time the practitioner was engaged I did not have a passage of the bowels for five days, but then there was a natural movement; and I have never had any difficulty since, namely, for over seven years. In about sixteen months I had a complete healing of the stomach trouble.
Another healing was experienced when our baby arrived. My wife did not think she had enough understanding of Christian Science to rely entirely on it, so a doctor and a room at the hospital were arranged for. The birth of the baby was considered premature. For three or four days nursing seemed to exhaust him, and it was decided to feed him in the nursery so as to see that he was getting enough nourishment. After several days my wife began to be anxious about him, and on inquiring was told that he had been very sick and that they did not know whether they could pull him through. When I arrived at the hospital that afternoon my wife told me what the nurse had said. I went to the telephone and called the doctor. He told me the same as the nurse had told my wife. I went back into the room and began to work in Science as best I could. In a few minutes the nurse came in with the baby. I went right on with the work, and did not hear the nurse leave the room. After finishing the work I was very happy when my wife told me the baby had been brought in to her to nurse, and that they had had no trouble at all. On leaving the hospital I called the practitioner and treatment was taken up. My wife and the baby left the hospital on the twelfth day.
After three or four months of nothing but Christian Science help, the baby began to increase in weight; but he seemed unable to hold up his head. This condition was overcome when he was seven months old. Then, however, he did not seem able to walk when he should; but the difficulty was overcome, and he started to walk at twenty-two months. Next, mortal mind suggested he was not going to be able to talk. This also was overcome, and he began to talk at four years. The little fellow is seven years old now, and is as fine a boy as anyone could wish to see.
