It is many years since my first healing, when I was raised from invalidism to a life of activity. Through many experiences I am learning that healing comes only through spiritualization of thought. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 95) Mrs. Eddy says, "We approach God, or Life, in proportion to our spirituality, our fidelity to Truth and Love." I am learning, too, through daily work that all real business is the Father's business, and that we have many opportunities of proving this.
One evening while preparing dinner I grasped an iron pan which had been in a hot oven for nearly an hour, neglecting to use the protection of the cloth holder, Instantly my hand seemed to close up, and severe pain became manifest; but turning my thought to God, I said aloud, "Here is an opportunity to prove that the real man is not hurt." Within a few minutes the severe pain had abated and the hand gradually opened, so that I was able to go on preparing the dinner. The joy, though great for this quick healing, was not so great as for the lesson learned from it. After dinner I read the lesson for the week in the Christian Science Quarterly, when all trace of the mishap completely disappeared. When I returned to the kitchen the pan referred to assumed big proportions, and fear of it loomed up. Then came the thought that the pan had not hurt me, but that on handling it I had not used the protection provided. Then came the wonderful lesson; for I now realized that often I had attributed my downfalls to people who seemingly had caused them. I realized that a mortal has no more power than the pan had to make me suffer; that Love's protection is always present for us to use. In Science and Health we read on page 473, "God is everywhere, and nothing apart from Him is present or has power."
I am deeply grateful for the life and teachings of our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.
