[Written for the Sentinel]

Gratitude

I am grateful for the sunshine warm,
Bright symbol of the Father's love;
For all the flowers He gives the earth,
And for the shining stars above;

And for the lilting bird-songs, sweet,
That ever to their Maker rise;
For dewy twilight, soft and cool,
And for the sunset's flushing skies.

Grateful am I for kindly smiles,
And for the gentle, gracious ways
Of those whose presence ever brings
A tender gladness to our days;

For little children's laughter sweet,
Their trustfulness and purity;
And for each blessing God has given
To all His children and to me.

Dear Father, through them all I see
A loveliness that is divine;
Thy tender loving thoughts to us,
Of which these are the outward sign.
