About thirteen years ago, when we came West to make...

About thirteen years ago, when we came West to make our home, we were discouraged, poverty-stricken, and sick. Our baby was six months old; my husband had no position; we had no money; and worst of all, no God. Spasmodically, during my girlhood, I had attended the Christian Science church and occasionally studied the Lesson-Sermons, but I had see-sawed back and forth from Science, and I was as one solving an arithmetical problem who resorts to the rules of mathematics and the multiplication tables one minute and the next minute denounces them. It is not hard to understand that there could be no correct or quick solution to problems thus handled. In desperation my husband and I turned once more toward the light; but this time, as the wise men of yore, to follow where it would lead us. In this spirit of patient, obedient following, not puzzling over Euclid's propositions when we had not yet mastered the simplest arithmetical rules, we were led to the Christ, Truth, as revealed in Christian Science. We have since then made an effort to live in this truth, and in so far as we have been willing to be led, we have been healed both physically and financially.

Several years ago, on a Monday evening, I was stricken suddenly with a most torturous pain, which fastened itself on my right side, so that I could neither move nor permit myself to be moved. In this agony I was reminded of my father's suffering from inflammatory rheumatism. My fear was multiplied when I recalled that he had told me of suffering in a hospital for a year before he recovered.

I was roused from this diseased thinking by the thought that I was violating the second commandment in recalling this picture: I was making a graven image in thought and bowing in obedience before it. So I turned from the flood of error and entered the ark, as we are taught in Christian Science to do; and with my Bible, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and the faithful, loving help of a Christian Science practitioner the work was begun. I sat up in my chair all Monday night wrestling with error and praying for the light to break. Tuesday night I was helped into bed and had a restful sleep; Wednesday I was able to hobble about the house; Thursday all pain had left; Friday I was dressed and able to be about my regular duties, entirely healed.
