The Biblical statement, "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good," makes it quite clear that God has not made or provided, nor is He conscious of, such a place as hell. Christian Science teaches that hell is not a place, but a state of mind or consciousness. All wrongdoing excludes the wrongdoer in some measure from the consciousness of God's ever-presence; and since there are degrees of wrongdoing, there are degrees of what is termed hell. The sinner lives in a mental world or state which excludes God, and continues to suffer for his wrongdoing—his sense of separation from God—until, because of the suffering this entails, he repents, or turns away from his sin, to find divine Love, in all its wonderful manifestations awaiting his acceptance; but accept, he cannot, so long as he believes in the reality and pleasure of sin. Having turned from sin he progressively realizes the presence of heaven, which the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 587), defines as "harmony; the reign of Spirit; government by divine Principle; spirituality; bliss; the atmosphere of Soul."
