Nineteen years ago the truth was presented to me by one of Mrs. Eddy's students, at a time when I was in sore need, as a remedy for physical ailments which seemed to be chronic and incurable. I was taking three kinds of drugs every day, and in a panic lest I should forget one of them. Toast, soup, and cereals composed my diet for nearly two years, and I was miserable in mind and body. The textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, was sent to me by one of Mrs. Eddy's students, and with it a note encouraging me to read it, as the sender had known of many permanent healings brought about by reading the book through. At the time I was an ardent and active member of the Protestant Episcopal church, having been brought up in that faith. My first thought in taking the book into my hands was, Is this book founded on the teachings of Christ Jesus? If so, I will read it; but if it is the work of someone who does not acknowledge the divinity of the Christ, I do not want it.
I held the closed book in my hands a few moments and prayed God to guide me. I seemed to hear a voice saying, Open the book and read it. I did so, and read for hours and hours. After reading constantly for three days, I was filled with joy; for pain, depression, fear of death, and sorrow at the thought of leaving my dear ones had vanished, and I found myself well. I went to my medicine cabinet, which was filled with drugs, tonics, pills, and salves, and carried them all in the wastebasket to the ash can, to be destroyed. That evening I ate with my family, partaking of the dinner served, and enjoyed the meal, mentally praising God, "from whom all blessings flow." There were no ill effects. I now knew that food had no power to harm me, and that, as Jesus said, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." These words of the Way-shower were a great comfort to me, and they are still.
I am grateful for the physical healing; but far more than words can express I am grateful for the sustaining truth, which is revealed to us in the precious Bible and the "little book," pregnant with the words of Life, Truth, and Love. I am grateful for the revelator of this glorious Comforter, Christian Science, which reveals God as being with us, and which has come to guide the world "into all truth," as was promised by Christ Jesus. I am most grateful to God and His beloved Son; and I am grateful also to the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy, for all her sacred writings on this vast subject. I am profoundly grateful that she was so tenderly pitiful and compassionate that she could give up the world for Truth's sake; that she left all for Christ, and obediently blazed the way, forgiving her enemies, holding fast to Truth, in order to present to the world that truth which heals and saves.
