Among the Churches

Current Notes

Knoxville, Tennessee (First Church).—The congregation of First Church of Christ, Scientist, is now using its new church home, located at 615 West Hill Avenue. The new building was formerly a residence and designed along colonial lines with an imposing portico resting on four massive columns. This type readily lent itself to the style of architecture which the building committee had decided upon as preferable for the church building. It was necessary to remove all partitions in the interior and only the shell of the old house was used in designing the church, wings being added for Sunday school rooms. It became necessary, then, to design the interior in keeping with the exterior, and to this end the architect, committee, and interior decorator have worked unceasingly. The Sunday school room was designed along the lines of utility and conservation of space. The scheme is one of booths, which are so arranged that pupils assemble in classes for all exercises, and the superintendent and pianist are in a direct line of vision from each booth. This plan eliminates the necessity of an assembly room.
