Several years after I learned of Christian Science and...
Several years after I learned of Christian Science and had begun the study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I became ill. I had been reading the Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lessons and attending the church services on Sundays and also the Wednesday evening testimony meetings. When this sickness arose, I asked a practitioner of Christian Science to help me in overcoming the trouble. This help was lovingly given, and I was benefited; but I was not able to resume my daily duties. I was living in a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the time, and decided to go to my own home in a distant city.
The people with whom I was staying were kind to me; but they were not Christian Scientists, and they objected to my leaving their home without the consent of a medical doctor. One was called, and he pronounced the disease typhoid fever. He said, however, that it was all right for me to go home; which I did. I was confined in bed for several weeks. All this time I was having help from a local practitioner. This help was supported by my sister's reading to me daily from our textbook, she being interested in Christian Science. One day during this experience someone came to me and asked if I did not want a doctor. I replied, "No;" and was very sure of it. Immediately after this temptation I recognized Christ Jesus as my friend; and it was the first time I had so understood him. I would have suffered any trial rather than be disloyal by accepting material means for healing. The physical manifestation of error suddenly stopped, and I gained strength and health.
It is some time since this healing, but the illumination of the Christ is as clear and bright as it was then; and this Christ, Truth, I have learned, is the only remedy anyone ever needs or really wants. This was my healing in Christian Science, exemplifying the new birth of which our Leader so wonderfully writes in her book entitled "Miscellaneous Writings" (pp. 15–20), and of which Jesus himself spoke, saying, "Ye must be born again."
