With unspeakable gratitude I testify to the healing and redeeming power of Christian Science. When the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was lent to me I had just been condemned to a life of invalidism by my own doctor and a specialist. They said that the ligaments of my feet were in a serious condition, that gouty rheumatism had set in, and that nothing could cure me. While I was reading the first chapter in Science and Health, on Prayer, the truth was unfolded to me. (I was at that time an active member of the Church of England, and firm in the belief that God sent sickness to purify us and draw us nearer to Him.) I saw that God is not the author of sin, sickness, or death; and this thought immediately set me free. During the last fifteen years, instead of being in bondage, I have known only joyful activity. Very severe headaches, weak lungs, and other ailments have all disappeared, and I have never in that period of time had a day off duty or missed a church service through ill health.
For the unselfish life of our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, whose example and writings help us to follow in the footsteps of the Way-shower, Christ Jesus; for the understanding that God is Love; for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, with its many useful activities; and for loving workers and practitioners, I am indeed grateful. But most of all I am grateful for the cleansing process, "the spiritualization of thought and Christianization of daily life" (Science and Health, p. 272), which results in the humility that makes us great.
