This testimony is given in grateful acknowledgment of all that Christian Science has done for me in showing me that "man's extremity is God's opportunity."

Christian Science, with all that it stands for, was a closed book to me when I took up its study in the forlorn hope that it might prove beneficial. Although I had witnessed the healing of a friend, it had seemed too wonderful to be true. I had been a semi-invalid for years, unable to dispense with long rest cures, sedatives, and opiates, without which I slept very little. In spite of these, I grew steadily weaker and thinner and more discouraged, until a specialist whom I consulted said that if I were not operated on in a short time, he would not be responsible for the consequences. He considered my condition hopeless from a mental standpoint, and told me that the insane asylums were full of cases like mine. My own physician said that, although he considered an operation necessary, he would not give his consent until my physical condition improved, as I weighed only one hundred and fifteen pounds, and was very weak.

I had reached a stage where I was confined to bed the greater part of the time and could not retain any food; and then my mother, when apparently in good health, passed on. My own physician, who had faithfully attended me for years, finally told me there was nothing more he could do for me, and that I should try Christian Science. I asked the advice of friends, who I remembered had become Scientists, and followed their instructions to see a practitioner.
