At a time in my life when joy and hope seemed to have...
At a time in my life when joy and hope seemed to have completely disappeared from my experience, I was divinely led to take up the study of Christian Science; and I have not ceased to be grateful to God for His loving-kindness. This experience is proof to me that it is our Father's good pleasure to give us the kingdom of heaven.
With my first attendance at a Christian Science Wednesday evening testimony meeting came a strong desire to study this subject. The first thing that interested me was the large attendance at this service. What I heard and saw there started me thinking in the right direction. At that time I was in poor health, and my eyes were extremely weak, so weak that if I read more than the headlines of a newspaper I would suffer from eyestrain. I could not sit in a well-lighted room without suffering from this complaint, and did not dare read by lamplight at all.
Since a great fear of even trying to read had developed, the question, How can I study Christian Science with my eyes in this condition? naturally presented itself to me. Here again divine Love led me to do the right thing. I consulted a Christian Science practitioner, one who spoke with authority. I left his home feeling much encouraged. I was sure that I could at least try to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I did try, and I did read. I read just as much as I cared to, which was hours at a time, without any eyestrain. On the contrary, my eyes became stronger and the vision cleared. My general health improved rapidly, until it became normal. About three weeks later I laid off glasses which I had worn for fifteen years, without bad results. Within the next month this healing was put to a severe test. On changing positions I found myself obliged to work in a room where electric lights burned all day, and I did so without discomfort. During this period I also studied much at night. The liquor habit, which had caused me much trouble during a number of years prior to my interest in Christian Science, was also completely overcome through the study of this subject.
