I should like to relate the healing of a case of diphtheria...
I should like to relate the healing of a case of diphtheria which took place in my family several years ago. One Friday, my youngest daughter was taken sick, and that night her sister, who was a trained nurse, stayed with her. In the morning, seeing that the child was very ill and becoming unconscious, I called up a Christian Science practitioner, who at once commenced to work, and in a little while the child revived. Then the nurse said she would take a culture to the Health Department, as she thought it was a very bad case of diphtheria. This daughter was the superintendent of a hospital for contagious diseases, and therefore was familiar with the symptoms of diphtheria. She took the culture over to the Health Department, and in the afternoon the bacteriologist telephoned that it was diphtheria in its very worst form. Later one of the doctors connected with the Health Department telephoned the same thing, and said he was sending out some antitoxin, which should be administered at once, expecting the nurse to do this. However, the antitoxin remained on the dressing table unopened, while Christian Science treatment was continued.
On Sunday the little girl would grow better at times and then worse, and on Monday she seemed very much worse. The practitioner was with us both days, and remained on Monday night. No one stayed in the room with the patient that night except her sister, the nurse, who the next morning said to me, "Mama, I thought my sister was passing on in my arms at one time last night, for she acted exactly as I have seen others act just before they pass on; but I called the practitioner, who was in the next room, and in a few minutes sister said, 'My throat is all right, and I can swallow.' " From that time on the child improved, for fear had been destroyed and Truth was the victor. My daughter said that in all her experience she had never nursed a more malignant case.
I have had many proofs since then of the power of divine Love to heal, and I am deeply grateful to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who left for each and every one her beautiful writings, which, when conscientiously studied and applied, heal sickness and sin of every name and nature.
