Although I had, during my long life, turned to God for help in all cases of trouble, of disease or misery of any kind, I did not do it in the right way. Especially in disease, I leaned very much on materia medica. I never went from home without a little bag with drops and pills; and I spent plenty of money to save myself and my dear ones. We were finally told there was no help for us in material means; and when Christian Science was offered to me, I clung to it as one who is drowning. I had been trying to find the truth, but it was a long time before I reached the open fountain of understanding, though Love was leading me and often giving me proofs of God's ever-presence and help. My eyes were, however, darkened by the many seeming misfortunes, losses, diseases, to which I bowed my head with humility and resignation, as in my religion they were supposed to be sent from God. But by and by I began to understand what divine Love and the ever-presence of God mean.
Once in a train a strange discomfort and incomprehensible fear crept into my consciousness. Without delay I began to repeat the ninety-first psalm, which brings such indescribable peace. Suddenly the train stopped for about ten minutes in the midst of a field. "Why?" we asked. The reason was that another train was coming straight toward us upon the same rails. I then understood why I had been urged to repeat the ninety-first psalm: I had felt the inharmonious thoughts of an approaching accident, and the truth prevented it.
As proof of God's care for us I can also acknowledge with the greatest gratitude the arrival of some dear Scientist friends in our country. Their understanding helps me to get out of many errors and to progress in the study of Christian Science.
