True Healing

Christian Science has become widely known throughout the world largely because of the healing of disease and sin which it has been instrumental in bringing about. Many in need of healing have heard of the healing of others; and this has often induced them, possibly after they have exhausted material methods, to seek the aid of Christian Science on their own behalf. They, in turn, have become earnest students of the Science of Being, and thus have been healed. It must have been similar in Jesus' time. Many must have come to the Master for healing because they had heard of the healing of others; and certainly he pointed to the "signs and wonders" his spiritual understanding wrought, as proof of the veracity of his teachings.

As it was then, when the great, yet humble Nazarene pilgrimaged on earth, so it is to-day the healings which are taking place through the understanding of God and man which Christian Science gives—the "signs and wonders"—that prove the truth of Christian Science. Referring to this on page 150 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes: "Now, as then, signs and wonders are wrought in the metaphysical healing of physical disease; but these signs are only to demonstrate its divine origin,—to attest the reality of the higher mission of the Christ-power to take away the sins of the world."

In the above quotation Mrs. Eddy places her finger exactly on the situation: the metaphysical healing of disease which is taking place in Christian Science practice to-day, testifies to the veracity of the system, proves it to be based on an understanding of the Christ, Truth, and points to the ultimate salvation of all men from every false material concept. The healing of disease is a very important part of the work of the Christian Scientist because of the relief it brings to suffering humanity; but it is by no means the whole of the work. Indeed, a healing of sickness brought about in this way should be but an indication of the beginning of the entire regeneration of the individual; for who that has taken up the study of Christian Science and has perhaps received a speedy healing from what may have been considered a dangerous form of disease, has not felt as if he had touched but the veriest hem of the truth, and that, having had this wonderful proof of Truth's healing power, he must go on with his study in order to feel himself freed from all the erroneous thoughts which tend to inharmony or suffering.
