[Written for the Sentinel]

If God is Really God to Me

If God is really God to me,
There is no binding pain;
For His great presence, realized,
Brings sweetest peace again.
And when earth's dreary problems throng,
And fill the way with gloom,
I only knows His love is mine.
And sunshine floods the room.

If God is really God to me,
The bitterness of years
Is blotted out with unselfed love,
Which dries the blinding tears.
And when from weariness and strife
Each moment seems a test,
I just remember the dear words,
"And I will give you rest."

If God is really God to me,
I cannot wander long
In error's devious, winding paths,
That lead to harm and wrong;
For God doth guard me even there,
And leaves me not alone,
But leads me, guides me, safely back,
To know I am His own.
