Though I had known of Christian Science through having lived for several years among those who practiced it, physical suffering seemed necessary to bring me to the point of testing its healing efficacy for myself.

I had a week's treatment in Christian Science and was practically healed of what seemed to be my trouble; but, alarmed at what I considered the moral demands of this teaching and unwilling to subscribe to them, I returned to further experiments in materia medica. After several months, during which there was a return to the old condition of constant discomfort, the surgeon who was treating me advised an operation, saying the trouble was probably chronic appendicitis. I accordingly began making preparations for a leave of absence from my work, but was so filled with fear of the outcome and of my lack of ability to continue selfsupporting that at the earnest request of an aunt I again asked for Christian Science treatment. This time, through the efforts of the practitioner, I was able to remain faithful to its teachings.

The healing was slow, and continued during a number of years; but I am grateful that it was accomplished in just this way, as the seeming delay only made me more constant in my study, and surely led me up from the spiritual oblivion into which I had sunk and where I thought I wanted to remain. It has been a joy to learn that religion is founded on the Rock, Christ, and that it can neither be disturbed nor destroyed.
