Public interest in the healing of physical disease by mental...

Public interest in the healing of physical disease by mental means is evidently shared by the rabbi whose sermon on "Christian Science and Jewish Science," at the Euclid Avenue Temple, was reported in a recent issue of the Times. Not only Christian Scientists but many others will agree with his statement that "medicine is all too prone to forget that man has a mind as well as a body." In regard to the further statement that Christian Science and Jewish science "have worked into" a "badly digested psychology" which "has resulted in a grotesque mixture which is neither religion nor science," I desire to offer a word of correction. Christian Science (and my remarks refer to it alond) cannot be dismissed in a word as nonreligious. The adherents of Christian Science, whose number runs into hundreds of thousands, have built and are maintaining numerous churches all over the world that compare favorably with those of any other religious denomination. Many of these churches are filled to overflowing twice each week. The congregations worship earnestly and devoutly. They pray not only in church but elsewhere to the divine Being, whom they revere and love, and whom they know as God. They strive to render obedience and true service to this God at all times. They fully agree with Mrs. Eddy's statement, "What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 4). They constantly endeavor to broadcast sunshine and cheer, and to bring into the lives of others something of the joy that has become theirs. Sickness, sin, and sorrow are constantly being removed and destroyed by their application of the teachings of Christian Science. What is the world's conception of religion, it might be asked, if this be irreligious?

As the word "science" denotes a classified or exact knowledge of a subject, it is used in connection with the word "Christian" to define or explain that this teaching is an exact or demonstrable, hence scientific, application of the teaching or religion of Jesus the Christ. The entire structure of Christian Science is based on love for God and man. With that foundation rendered practical and usable by a scientific understanding of the method and practice of the master Christian, Christ Jesus, it becomes a living, breathing religion; and every Christian Scientist knows it to be so. Because this is the case, he wishes his fellow-men to recognize him as a genuine religionist imbued with an earnest desire to further the cause of true Christianity and to help mankind at all times.
