So freely have I received of the blessings which Christian Science...
So freely have I received of the blessings which Christian Science brings, that I feel I can do no less than give, trusting that my message may help and cheer some seeker for Truth.
After the birth of the younger of my two daughters, my health seemed to break down completely. The trouble was diagnosed by my physician as arthritis; and although he was most kind and conscientious, and did all in his power to help me, it was to no effect. From day to day I never knew which joint would be affected; and if the lameness and pain left me for a short time, a most unsightly and painful skin disease would appear; so that I was a constant invalid. Added to this, a severe nervous breakdown was experienced; and I had recovered from this but a very short time when a further complication set in, after the nature of phlebitis. Another physician was called, but seemed able to do little to relieve my suffering; and finally he said that I must lie flat on my back, not moving from my hips, as this was my only chance of recovery. This course proving unsuccessful, osteopathy was the next resort, but this too proved fruitless; and in the depth of despair my only comfort was the words from the forty-sixth psalm, "Be still, and know that I am God."
At this point the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was put into my hands; and although formerly impatient with what I thought Christian Science to be, and clinging tenaciously to my upbringing in the Church of England, I now prayed for light to understand. Within a few days I had my first conscious answer to prayer, for a friend came and told me of her own recent and seemingly miraculous healing through Christian Science, and urged me to send for a practitioner. It now seemed that God was directing me and I must obey. Accordingly, a Christian Science practitioner was sent for, and words seem inadequate to describe my next experience. As the fundamentals of Christian Science were placed before me, with a burst of light the allness of God dawned on my thought—that He is all-Love, and therefore punishment could not come from Him; that He is Spirit, therefore man and the universe must be spiritual, perfect. I knew this, and felt that I should always have known it. After the first treatment the Bible and Science and Health became so clear to me, the life of Jesus so divinely natural, that I saw that the works he did I could indeed do also in the ratio of my spirituality. At noon the next day I sat up in a chair to my meal, and when alone walked around my bed. The following morning early brought the restoration of harmonious bowel action, after months of pain and obstruction; and I ran downstairs without assistance, carried on wings of joy. A great healing had indeed taken place!
