[Written for the Sentinel]

Bethlehem To-day

On a night of stars and singing
A babe is born,
Wrapt in humility,
And cherished tenderly,
And safely carried into Egypt
From the wrath of Herod.

All that concerneth it
Is pondered secretly
In the heart's sanctuary,
Treasured in silence
And shielded patiently,
All through its infancy.

Wise men may behold it,
Coming with precious gifts—
Gold of their treasuries,
Deepest experience,
Incense of prayers—
All their hearts' offering.

And the shepherds too may find it,
They who guard their flocks by night;
And for these shall be
Star-shine lost in sun-shine;
And a new song will they sing.

Shepherds and wise men both may go
To-day to Bethlehem,
And Christ be born anew to them,
In Bethlehem.
