The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Oakville, Ontario, Canada (Society).

Lecturer: Gavin W. Allan; introduced by Evatt L. P. Still, who said:—

Christian Science presents to humanity the practical Christianity of Jesus as an accurate Science, and claims that it is as potent to-day in healing and redemptive work as it was in the first century. That this claim is true is proved by the experiences of unnumbered thousands in all parts of the world, who express gratitude for healings received, not only of sin and sickness, but of every discordant condition environing human existence. "By their fruits ye shall know them." To-day the demand is for results. Mortals are becoming weary of promises. Christian Science deals in results, and is eminently practical in daily living. In my own experience I have found this to be the case. I can remember a time when I never went to bed without taking a drug. For a number of years I have not tasted a drug of any description, and Christian Science has been my only physician, satisfactorily healing me of influenza, rheumatism, a severe attack of lumbago, and various minor ailments. "God is no respecter of persons." These blessings await all who hold themselves in readiness to receive them.

Cordova, Alaska (Society).

Lecturer: Robert Stanley Ross; introduced by Mrs. Bessie Brown, who said:—

Christian Science comes to a world that is longing for real achievements, real happiness and health, and shows how these can be gained by holding to the real and letting go the unreal. Until we let go our hold on envy, hatred, grudges, and selfish ambitions, we never can know the joy of love, kindness, charity, and good will. While we hold fast to illusions about God and man we never can know God as infinite, divine Love, and man as His image and likeness. While we hold to false beliefs about health and happiness, we can never realize with the Psalmist that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." On page 261 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy we read, "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts."

Muskogee, Oklahoma (First Church).

Lecturer: Mrs. Nelvia E. Ritchie; introduced by Ralph W. Everett, who said:—

A Christian Science lecture is a joyous occasion because it declares man's right to dominion over, and offers a plan of salvation from, sin and suffering. It was such a plan of salvation that Christ Jesus taught, practiced, and left to mankind. In much of his healing of physical ills, Jesus clearly indicated that sin was the cause of the suffering; and by linking the two, cause and effect, as he did, he showed that the presence of physical suffering indicates a need for more of that Mind to be in us "which was also in Christ Jesus."

For more than a year prior to my first interest in the study of Christian Science I had suffered with what is known as Bright's disease. When a friend suggested help through Christian Science I at first refused; but when asked to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy I consented, more out of curiosity than with any faith in receiving benefit. I had read not more than two or three chapters of this book when its clear logic overcame my prejudice. I then decided to have Christian Science treatment. During my illness I had lost a great deal in weight and my suffering was intense, but after the first treatment in Christian Science the suffering was entirely overcome. Improvement was marked from the first; and it was not long until every vestige of the disease had gone and my former weight had been regained. Closely following this healing, another member of my family was stricken with what is generally considered to be an incurable malady; but through the application of Christian Science a complete and permanent recovery followed. This was more than twenty years ago; and since that time Christian Science has been our only remedy.

Christchurch, New Zealand (Second Church).

Lecturer: Algernon Hervey-Bathurst; introduced by Edgar G. Harris, who said:—

In the Bible we read: "The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Christian Science has taught me that these words, uttered centuries ago, are just as applicable today as they were then. This was proved to me in my own experience when I was instantaneously healed of eye trouble of seven years' standing by reading the opening sentence in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (Pref., p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings." The words, "today is big with blessings," so illumined my consciousness that when I visited the oculist that day he informed me, after a lengthy examination, that my sight was normal and that lenses were no longer necessary. This was after wearing glasses for seven years. The smoking habit also left me through reading the textbook.

Lynchburg, Virginia (First Church).

Lecturer: Peter V. Ross; introduced by Miss Frances S. Williams, who said:—

In the Gospel of John, Christ Jesus gives us this promise: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." All down through the centuries people have been studying to know the real meaning of this passage of Scripture; but not until Mary Baker Eddy gave to the world the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," had a satisfactory explanation been given. My attention was first called to Christian Science through the healing of a friend. She had lost the sight of her left eye, and the very best specialists in the country, among them her own son, had pronounced the sight entirely gone. But with three weeks' treatment in Christian Science her sight was completely restored. We know that Christ Jesus healed through his perfect, spiritual understanding of the real man and his relation to God. This spiritual understanding heals to-day as surely as it healed nineteen centuries ago. It will free us from the bondage of every false belief.

Hoboken, New Jersey (First Church).

Lecturer: Miss Violet Ker Seymer; introduced by Louis W. Schaaff, who said:—

On page 16 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says: "The highest prayer is not one of faith merely; it is demonstration. Such prayer heals sickness, and must destroy sin and death." Christian Science is changing mankind's concept of prayer. It is no longer a mystery to those who study the Christian Science textbook, but it is a clear way by which we can come into the presence of God and feel the touch of Truth; it is born of faith and understanding, and this makes such prayer a priceless gift to students of Christian Science. Prayer, as we are taught in the Christian Science textbook, the prayer of affirmation, the prayer of demonstration, the prayer of understanding, heals physically, morally, and mentally. Through it we learn our true relationship to God, whom we also love to know as divine Principle.
