The Quality of Love

Can one think of any quality more beautiful than the quality of unselfish love, serving and blessing all mankind? Loving God, good, first, we know how to reflect love to others. It was this quality of love that Jesus manifested, and that enabled him to forgive and heal and accomplish all he did. Jesus' love was manifested through his expression of the perfect idea, his real self—the Christ. Thought must be spiritual to realize God's love, the love that is universal and unchanging, in the presence of which there cannot possibly be any sin, sickness, or death.

Emotionalism, mere sentiment, is not real love. Spiritual love is the calm understanding of the eternal efficacy of God's law of good, and its demonstration is harmony, health, happiness, and unity. It is the constant practice of love that enables one to be a Christian Scientist. On page 113 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says, "The vital part, the heart and soul of Christian Science, is Love." She teaches that divine Love includes all; sees all, as its own creation. Love teaches obedience to the Golden Rule; and this obedience is the very foundation of happiness, unfolding more and more of goodness and mercy and joy.

The love which is the reflection of divine Love never condemns falsely, never judges falsely, but builds, uplifts, and establishes good in human consciousness, until the so-called material is replaced by the spiritual. There is no envy in such love, no egotism, no conceit, no vanity or ostentation, no rudeness or mistaken criticism, no sensitiveness or selfishness, no nagging, no evil thinking.
