Even in very early youth I had a most ardent desire for something better. In 1913 I had the opportunity to travel to America. Although the climate and the charm of nature invigorated me, yet it did not bring me the peace and rest which I sought. Burdened with sorrow and affliction, I lost almost every hope that there was a God. Shortly afterwards I was led to Christian Science. I attended the services and the Wednesday evening testimony meetings, which had a more and more uplifting effect on my thought. Through reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and through loving help in Christian Science, I have received many wonderful blessings.
Soon there awoke in me the desire to take this truth about God and man to my dear ones at home. Accordingly I came back here, almost two years ago. How great was my joy, and what a benefit it was, to find a Christian Science church already established in Hamburg! Before long, however, I was almost overwhelmed by a difficult problem. My brother, who had been on the field during all the years of the war and had been imprisoned for months at a time, was taken to the insane hospital at Friedrichsberg because of a mental derangement. At first this seemed to me to be a most horrible condition, and the first visits which I made to him were not pleasant. Soon the thought came to me that only through Christian Science could this error, which seemed so terrible, be overcome. Then I went to a dear Christian Science practitioner, who immediately encouraged me and took up the work in an untiring and loving manner.
Thereafter I went to see my brother with a much lighter spirit, and almost always found him quiet. Thus two months passed. One Sunday when I had an opportunity to speak to the hospital doctor, he remarked that a wonderful change had taken place in my brother. A few weeks later when I went to see him, the attendant came to meet me and said, "I will bring your brother to you." How astonished I was when in a few minutes he stood before me! For until then I had always found him in bed. Indeed, like a person whose fetters had been loosed he stood before me! This was for me an inexpressible, great proof of divine Love, and it filled me with deep gratitude. Soon after, to the very great wonder of the doctors, he was discharged, perfectly well. For a year or more he has been able to work, and even occupies the position which he had before the war.
