For a dozen or more years I had understood something...

For a dozen or more years I had understood something of the truth of Christian Science, in observing it practiced among Scientist friends and from some reading, but not until I had suffered a great physical ill, causing a hopeless state of thought, and had simultaneously grown weary of worldly affairs, did Christian Science become to me an only resort and hope. What Christian Science literature I had was read in a desire for peace. I had bought a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and had been trying to assimilate it from time to time, knowing its Principle to be Truth.

On a Sunday morning, February 24, 1917, I was rudely reminded of the appearance of an enlargement on my neck. Although I did not fear at first, out of curiosity and because my family wished it, I consulted a doctor who was an old friend. He was honest and kind, and told me the thing was called a goiter. He gave me the latest known medicine, and said he would prefer that I consult a well-known surgeon about it. I took the medicine regularly, and later called on the surgeon, who very flatly said it was a growth which should be removed at once, stating that he would write my doctor, advising him of his opinion. However, the latter did not agree that an operation should take place in any hurry. I went every few days to his office, and continued with his prescription, which I took regularly. He began a treatment of certain electric rays, for which I faithfully appeared every day for six months. In the meantime the growth had become annoying and noticeable, and a source of unhappiness to me and to my family. I was all this time attending Christian Science services, and had begun spending a day every week in the Christian Science Reading Room. While calling at the doctor's office daily in the vain effort to reduce the growth by electric application, I read all the late medical opinions on this kind of case and never could find reports of sure cure or anything hopeful. I gradually grew more and more miserable. Finally the doctor gently advised me to go to a renowned surgical clinic, saying that he had thought to help with his treatment, but felt now that I had better consult these surgeons. I said good-bye to him, thanking him.

My husband was beginning to take some interest in Christian Science, for he had been reading some copies of the Christian Science Sentinel. During this stage I telephoned a Scientist friend. She spoke some very reassuring words, and told me to telephone her again and come to see her if things grew too hard for me. I thanked her, but did not telephone again. I, however, began to turn away from all but God, as understood in Christian Science; and the condition gradually vanished. My health is perfect. My husband is convinced of my healing through Christian Science, and has been anxious for me to give this testimony to the world. I am also very glad of this opportunity, and will add that I was much helped by the reading of another's testimony in the Sentinel of the healing of goiter. I am thankful for the change in my ideals and the change in the relations of our family, mostly from material activity to greater peace and harmony.
