Overcoming Malpractice
Christian Scientists greatly rejoice in the supreme fact that God is the only power and presence. Demonstrated proof of this fact is found in the destruction of evil of whatsoever name or nature through the operation of divine law. Positively to know that God is infinite good excludes the possibility of reality inherent in an opposite, called generically evil, and specifically by any one of a variety of names invented by the so-called mortal mind in the effort to personalize evil and make it real.
Did Christian Scientists become fully conscious of the fact and its tremendous significance that God is the only presence, there would never arise the necessity of taking cognizance of the opposite claim of, or belief in, another reality as having power and entity. They would then give no credence to any claim opposed to good. From the belief in a material creation there has developed a seeming world of error, including evil in all the myriad types possible to be evolved from a falsity. Because of the claim of this supposititious state of consciousness to be real arises the necessity for the utilization of spiritual understanding to destroy its seeming evil power.
Mrs. Eddy was keenly aware of the necessity of being awake to the false claims of evils to possess reality and power. The need for the destruction of the belief in evil through understanding the truth about God and man may well be termed the raison d'être of the present revelation of Christian Science. The degree of our Leader's conviction as to the necessity of being awake to the false claims of evil is made clear in Article VIII, Section 6, of the Church Manual, and again in the stirring admonition at the bottom of page 442 in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Of the nothingness of evil Mrs. Eddy says on page 102 of our textbook: "Mankind must learn that evil is not power. Its so-called despotism is but a phase of nothingness. Christian Science despoils the kingdom of evil."
