When I first heard of Christian Science about ten years...
When I first heard of Christian Science about ten years ago, I was in every way most miserable. I seemed to be spared no suffering, and it appeared as if I were very easily tormented through sensitiveness, sorrow, and physical and mental suffering. To appearance I was poor, ill, abandoned by all, and most unhappy. I held in horror the religious teachings of my youth, and the prospect of bearing this life of misery without hope of escape made me think of suicide.
When, therefore, the all-loving Father was revealed to me by a gentle Christian Scientist, for whom I entertain deep gratitude, it seemed as if heaven had opened, and my whole being was instantaneously filled with boundless joy. I decided to study this wonderful teaching thoroughly, and to put it all into practice. Since then I have passed through innumerable trials. I did not lose courage for a single instant; and although I did not always know how to apply the truth, I leaned on God, who gives us His grace, because of His compassion, not taking account of our iniquities.
I have been healed of terrible headaches of over twenty years' standing with the help of a dear practitioner; but as a rule I have tried to make my own demonstrations by applying the truth. In this way I have seen crises of acute cystitis passing almost instantaneously, and later, sharp attacks of liver trouble, not less painful. Cold weather in particular used to cause me great suffering. I do not remember feeling warm before I knew of Christian Science. One day in the street, although warmly clad, I felt as though I should die of cold, and in this extremity the truth delivered me. Since then, now four years ago, I have never again felt cold, although I wear in all seasons the minimum of clothing.
