All my life, until the year 1900, I was a sufferer from inflammatory rheumatism, and later the condition became chronic, the last attack being of three years' duration. Medical practice had been tried in many different ways, but only occasionally did I have even brief benefit. I was crippled, and had great difficulty in walking even when I was able to get around. My wife knew at that time some Christian Scientists, and asked me if I would like to have treatment. I had got into a condition that was hopeless, so that I should have tried anything that promised surcease from pain. A Christian Science practitioner was called, and during the treatment that followed I fell asleep, waking shortly afterwards free from pain. The practitioner said, "You are healed;" and I was healed. She said, "You may dress;" and I did dress, thinking of Jesus' words, "Take up thy bed, and walk." When the practitioner called I was in bed, where I had lain for several weeks unable to move without great suffering. When she left I was up—dressed and well. The healing was instantaneous. This was on a Saturday night. On Sunday I attended Christian Science services, and on the following day, Monday, I went to business. From that time to this I have not had a rheumatic ache or pain.
Seven years after this I had great spiritual healing and regeneration. Then I knew what our beloved Leader meant when she wrote (Poems, p. 75):—
