It is with the deepest sense of gratitude to God and to our revered Leader that I send this testimony of healing, which I experienced some time ago. I was preparing for a trip to Europe, and about five days before sailing I seemed to succumb to nervous exhaustion and mental depression. I immediately declared the truth, that there could be only one Mind and that Mind was God, good. As the time drew near for sailing, my condition grew worse. On the morning of sailing I felt scarcely able to rise and dress; however, I made the effort, and holding fast to the truth, knew that there was nothing in God's kingdom to interfere with my going about the Father's business. I then called up a practitioner and told her I was leaving home in fifteen minutes to sail for England, explaining the circumstances, and asked for immediate treatment and absent treatment for six consecutive days while I was at sea. The loving answer came that she would help me, and she assured me that divine Love would be with me. After we had pulled out into the stream, I had more time to do my mental work. Our revered Leader says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 1), "Desire is prayer;" and on page 15 she tells us: "In order to pray aright, we must enter into the closet and shut the door. We must close the lips and silence the material senses. In the quiet sanctuary of earnest longings, we must deny sin and plead God's allness." With these thoughts I retired to the quietude of my stateroom and prayed earnestly for strength and courage, and above all, for spiritual understanding. I retired early, read Science and Health until well into the night, and then fell asleep. I awoke next morning, Sunday, feeling somewhat refreshed. I knew that divine Love was with me, and that error must give way to Truth. About three o'clock in the afternoon the healing came suddenly. I was entirely free from every discordant condition. I learned from the wireless operator that we were just over three hundred miles from Philadelphia and were still in touch with that station. I immediately sent a message home requesting the practitioner to stop treatment.
This was only another of the many proofs I have had of the efficacy of the healing power and ever-presence of divine Love. We only have to know and understand that wherever we are, God, good, is ever present and ever ready to help those who seek Him in spirit and in love. Words are inadequate to express fully my gratitude to God and our revered Leader, and to the loving practitioner and friends who have helped me to acquire the understanding that I have; and for everything that Christian Science stands for.—Alfred A. Waters, Philadelphia, Pa.
