For five years before knowing anything of Christian Science,...
For five years before knowing anything of Christian Science, my one desire was to know if there was a God of love. I had joined various churches, one after another, in my endeavor to know Him aright; but never with the result hoped for. I had finally reached the point where I was as those "having no hope, and without God in the world," for the best physicians and specialists in the large city where I lived had condemned me to die, as they all said I had malignant cancer of the stomach, and could live but a short time. Those who saw me called me a living skeleton. I could neither eat nor sleep, and had never known happiness. From a small child I had been deprived of all material comforts, education, and what meant most of all to me, love; I could neither read nor write English, and could speak just enough to make myself understood.
I finally heard of a Christian Science lecture to be given, where God was to be spoken of; and somehow I managed to get there. After the lecture I went to the one who had spoken and said, "Do you really believe there is a God of love?" and he answered, "Why, God is the very Life of you." I asked him to tell me where I could learn more about this great God. He directed me to a Christian Science practitioner, to whom I went early the next morning, and asked her to explain God to me. I never dreamed of receiving healing at this time. My only desire was to know God as Love. The practitioner opened "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, at page 465, and read to me the definition of God, as follows: "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." I felt like a bird on wings. I was instantaneously healed through the divine revelation of what God is. I was so joyous, so free, that words cannot express what I felt. I prepared a meal and ate heartily for the first time in many years, and my family believed me to have suddenly gone insane. But I had only found freedom, for God had loosed the bonds with which Satan had bound me.
Since that time the Christ, Truth, has been steadily unfolding in my consciousness, and has helped me through many severe trials. Through the study of the authorized Christian Science literature I am to-day able to read and speak English quite easily, and also to write to some extent. Truth has been my only teacher, for I have had no other schooling since taking up the study of Christian Science, and very little before. However severe the test I am called upon to go through, God's voice is ever with me, saying: "Fear thou not; for I am with thee;" "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." I have proved many times when seemingly going through deep waters, that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need," as Mrs. Eddy says on page 494 of Science and Health.
