In January, I suffered terribly from an abscess in the ear. For four days I could not eat anything; and the doctor who had been asked to come, without my being consulted, said, after examining the mouth, the ear, and the nose, that I must have very hot compresses applied all night, and that next morning I must go to the hospital to have the abscess opened. The doctor had said to the hotel proprietors where I lived that it was urgently necessary for me to have this operation performed, or I might lose my reason. I tried to declare the truth and read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but without being able to collect my thoughts: I seemed to be losing my memory. I did not consent to having the compresses. Next morning I seemed better, being less feverish, having been able to sleep a little. But about three o'clock in the afternoon the pain came on again, worse than ever. I could not keep still; and at five o'clock I dressed and asked the chambermaid to be kind enough to go with me to see a Christian Science practitioner. The hotel proprietors and the doctor, who had arrived, wanted to prevent me from going out, because it was cold and I was feverish, and because I could scarcely stand. I started out, however, accompanied by the chambermaid.
After some good advice and a treatment from the practitioner, which lasted between fifteen and twenty minutes, I felt myself reviving: my memory came back to me, and I no longer felt any pain. From that moment I was completely healed. To the great astonishment of the proprietors, I went to work again next morning. The chambermaid could not get over her astonishment, nor could the proprietors. As for the doctor, he could not understand my healing, which he pronounced marvelous, after examining the ear, where he no longer found any of the inflammation of a few hours before. I was hungry and ate a good dinner.
I do not find adequate words to testify my gratitude not only for the healing, but also for the good advice given me by the practitioner.—(Mrs.) Marie Junck, Paris, France.
