I am glad to testify to the power of Christian Science in...
I am glad to testify to the power of Christian Science in the healing of a so-called incurable disease. My son had a scalp disease that seemed very stubborn. It would respond to Christian Science treatment, and then it would grow worse again. Finally, one member of the family insisted on medical treatment. Specialists were consulted, and they diagnosed the trouble as alopecia. They said it was incurable, for the roots of the hair had been destroyed by a germ, and all they could do would be to try to save the remaining hair. Their treatment was very severe, consisting of a strong solution, which reached the roots of the hair in the endeavor to destroy the germ. One day the boy asked the doctor what would prevent the chemical from destroying the hair along with the germ. The doctor said, "We are taking that chance." The boy then refused to go back for any more medical treatment, and again asked for Christian Science treatment; so we took up the work together. Medical theory had to be met and nullified.
The condition grew worse, until the last hair had disappeared from the boy's head; but we worked on, endeavoring to obey Mrs. Eddy's injunction, as given in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 261), "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts." We had many battles with discouragement, but each time found encouragement in consecrated study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings. As a better concept of man was held to and the evidence presented by the material senses denied, a sense of joy and gratitude took the place of discouragement and despondency, and the physical condition began to improve, the first noticeable improvement being the overcoming of extreme sensitiveness as to his appearance. After several months a first growth, similar to a baby's first hair, began to appear, and this quickly changed to the heavier hair. This healing took place when the boy was sixteen years of age. He is now nineteen years old, and has an abundant growth of hair. I am grateful for the many lessons learned during the working out of this problem, grateful to our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for revealing to this age the divine Principle of universal harmony, and the rule for its application to human affairs.
When I was quite a young woman, physicians told me that the liver trouble from which I was then suffering, and which they called paralytic jaundice, would probably result in total paralysis, and that they could give me only temporary relief. Also, when I was about twelve years of age, I was hurt in an accident. A large tumor formed from this injury, and was later removed by surgeons. At the time of the operation the doctors said that the wound would never heal, as a bone seemed to be affected. Twenty years later, when my son was born, I asked the attending physician about this condition. He said he could probably heal it over the surface, but that I had better leave it alone.
