The phenomenal success of Christian Science and the...
Mercury
The phenomenal success of Christian Science and the incalculable good it is diffusing throughout the world should convey to unbiased persons that there is not much wrong with the practice of a religion which can produce such stupendous benefits to humanity. Any one who has the least demonstrable knowledge of Christian Science knows that suggestion, auto or otherwise, has nothing whatever to do with it. Such an assertion is reminiscent of the Pharisees' explanation of our Saviour's healing works, for their traditions and prejudices blinded them from seeing "the finger of God" operating amongst them.
Every one is entitled to interpret the Bible according to his spiritual understanding; but the Scriptures must be "spiritually discerned." To infer that you are a Christian, and that your neighbor is not, might be mere assertion. The Master himself gave the true test when he said, "A good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; ... for every tree is known by his own fruit." That Christian Science is based solely on the Bible and the life, works, and teachings of Christ Jesus and the apostles is attested in the following Tenets of Christian Science, to be found on page 497 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "1. As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life. 2. We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God's image and likeness." Well-informed people know that Christian Scientists have the deepest reverence, love, and adoration for God and His Christ.
