The compassionate appeal of Christian Science lies...

Tupelo Review

The compassionate appeal of Christian Science lies largely in the fact that after all material remedies have failed there stands the eternal fact that Christ Jesus did heal disease; and Christian Scientists prove their understanding of spiritual power by doing the same. The religion of Christian Science is simple and full of spiritual beauty.

On page 92 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says, "The foundation of evil is laid on a belief in something besides God." Next, as we begin to understand that in infinite divine Mind, or God, we live, move, and have our being, we gradually learn to control our thought by replacing wrong with right thought. We thus become aware of the inability of our mortal bodies to become diseased unless we first think evil. Also, we are enabled to correct discordant conditions, which prevent the enjoyment of peace and happiness. However, while the false belief lasts, disease and discord seem real to mortal mind, which is composed of the five material senses, just as much as a dream seems real to the sleeper. In the Preface to Science and Health (p. vii) the following words occur: "The time for thinkers has come. Truth, independent of doctrines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portal of humanity. Contentment with the past and the cold conventionality of materialism are crumbling away. Ignorance of God is no longer the stepping-stone to faith. The only guarantee of obedience is a right apprehension of Him whom to know aright is Life eternal."
