Impelled by a desire to repay, even in small measure,...

Impelled by a desire to repay, even in small measure, my debt of gratitude to Christian Science for the wonderful mental and physical healing I have received through its teachings, and in the hope of helping others, I give testimony.

Although from childhood I was subject to bad attacks of malaria, I was able to work steadily, and never had a complete physical breakdown until early in March, 1919. This began with frequent attacks of nausea, which forced me to take to my bed. The family physician came, but my condition grew steadily worse. After the lapse of several days there was a consultation of doctors, who made a careful diagnosis and said I was afflicted with cancer or ulceration of the stomach and must be operated upon immediately if my life was to be saved. I was taken to a hospital. They operated at once, only to discover there was neither ulcer nor cancer in the stomach. The remark was made subsequently by the operating surgeon, "There are no visible defects in the stomach." I was returned to bed exhausted by loss of blood and the shock of the operation. There was no abatement of the terrible nausea. Added to this, I went blind; and soon afterward became violently insane. As I was getting worse steadily, was wasted to a mere skeleton, and there seemed no hope of recovery, my wife suggested taking me home. The physicians did not object. They held another consultation after I reached home, and agreed that I could live only a few hours longer.

Fortunately for me, my nurse was interested in Christian Science; and when she heard the doctors' verdict, she went to my wife and told her, at the same time suggesting that we dismiss the doctors and try Christian Science. My wife consented, and a practitioner was called. I had eaten no food for more than a month, and for two weeks previous had not been able to retain even water. After four days' treatments, the nausea ceased, and I was able to eat and retain food. Both stomach and bowels were normal at the end of that fourth day, and have remained so ever since. For the first time in years I was able to eat anything I liked and suffered no bad effects; and I have had no more attacks of malaria. I soon began taking on weight; sanity returned; and I began to see a little. The first time I was put in a chair and wheeled out on to the porch I could not distinguish passers-by, but very soon I was able to see fairly well with my left eye. The right eye remained totally blind for two years, but I am now beginning to see with it also. I can read, and use the typewriter, and go about at will. I am earning my living in a business that requires me to travel from town to town, and tests me in every way. I am an exceptionally strong, healthy man. The right eye is improving constantly; and I know it will be restored to full vigor if I continue to follow the trail blazed with such loving care and patience by our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy.
