On October 13, 1893, while traveling with my parents,...
On October 13, 1893, while traveling with my parents, I met with a very serious accident. I was so seriously injured that three physicians said recovery would be impossible. However, after a week of unconsciousness I awoke to the pain I was suffering from my various injuries. I did not then know of Christian Science, but had the best medical treatment from very kind and conscientious physicians, one of whom I shall always remember for his great kindness. It was several weeks before I had sufficiently recovered to be sent home under the care of nurses and a doctor. In a year I was able to walk naturally, but the pain of the spinal injury was an ever present fact to me. I went to many specialists trying to get relief. The verdict was always the same: You have a badly dislocated spine; and there are conditions that will become acute, and you will pass on as a result of them.
For many years I led a miserable existence, until I looked forward to death as a welcome friend which would sometime relieve me of my suffering. At last the time came when this event seemed about to take place. I felt quite reconciled, except that I wished once more to look on the face of a dear relative. Christian Science was the only remedy I had never tried; so I called for help from a practitioner, hoping it might be possible to prolong life a few hours. I received a very loving response to my request, and then forgot all about it. I did not expect to see another sunrise; but as day dawned, and I moved about in my bed, I found myself free from pain, a condition I could not understand. So I stood upon the floor and went through some exercises to find just what had occurred. It was not until then that I realized it was my healing in Science, and tears of gratitude fell. This took place eleven or twelve years ago; and my back is still well.
Since then I have been healed of a complete nervous breakdown by the help of a faithful practitioner; and through the understanding of Christian Science that I have been able to gain, a birthmark has been removed from my face, and I have helped myself in various other ways. Two that seemed small, but pleased me very much, were a healing of chapped hands and the removal of corns. However, it is the same law that governs, whether the need seems small or great; and there is nothing impossible to God.
