It is with a deep sense of gratitude to God for the many blessings received through Christian Science, together with the hope that my experience may encourage others, that I offer this testimony in appreciation of the wonderful benefits received from the study of this great truth. Two years ago I was a member of another church and serving in the capacity of usher. I had been interested in religious matters since a small boy, and as I grew older the teaching that God would send sickness and pain to His children caused me considerable worry and confusion. I had been suffering for some time from nervous trouble and terrible headaches. An all-consuming weariness seemed to take hold of me, so that I was unable to work, plan, or take an interest in affairs, and was greatly troubled with insomnia, manifesting itself in fits of mental depression.
It was while in this state of mental darkness that I was led to Christian Science. Treatment was taken up by a Christian Science practitioner, and continued until I discovered that I did not have that tired feeling. I felt strong, energetic, and quite happy; the depression was gone; and the light fairly shone in my consciousness that "all is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all," as Mrs. Eddy says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 468). No one can possibly realize what joy and peace this brought to me, except one with a like experience. Since that time I have been healed of dysentery and influenza. Both of these errors seemed to howl and scream at times, and, like Apollyon in "Pilgrim's Progress," threatened me with calamity. These lions in the path, however, proved to be chained and had no power; and I saw again, with ever increasing faith, that "all is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all."
I am indeed grateful to Mrs. Eddy for Science and Health and other Christian Science literature, and grateful to the Christian Science practitioners and friends who have helped me so lovingly, patiently, and cheerfully. I seem to stumble a great deal; but I am learning, and there is always that wonderful sense of security and confidence which comes from knowing that, regardless of all seeming evidence to the contrary, God is ever present and has all-power.—Harry Smethurst, Manhattan, Kans.
