With heart filled with gratitude for what Christian Science...
With heart filled with gratitude for what Christian Science has done, and is doing, for me every day, I give this testimony, hoping it may help others, as many that I have read have helped me.
In the month of August, 1919, my eldest daughter, who had been interested in Christian Science for nearly a year, engaged a practitioner for her mother, who was to undergo a serious operation, as the doctor said nothing could be done for her. By absent treatment in Christian Science her mother was healed. Thus the seed was sown in our home.
At another time, my daughter had borrowed the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, for a neighbor, who finally decided not to read it. Seeing it on the library table, I unconsciously reached for it; and it was to me as the angel which came to Jacob. Like Jacob I was surprised at the light which dawned upon me. At the end of two weeks, when the book was to be returned, I found I could not part with it. I began in earnest to read it and live it; and the understanding that I derived from the study leaves me without proper words to express the gratitude and blessings which I have received.
Now, I wish to tell a few of my experiences. I love to read the Christian Science textbook with the Bible, the Lesson-Sermons, all Christian Science literature, to attend the Sunday services, the Wednesday evening testimony meetings, and lectures concerning Christian Science, because it has been my regeneration. I am not an English scholar, and I had only three years of grammar school in my native country. I have been in this country twenty-four years, can read the newspaper, but Science and Health is the first book that I have read. So I am learning as a beginner, as a child. Science and Health has been my only teacher. The first two weeks of my study I experienced a pain between my shoulders. My daughter told me this was merely a trial. The pain lasted about two weeks. In the meantime, I kept right on reading and performing my duties; and the pain disappeared. Then I desired to help others.
As I operate an elevator and switchboard until midnight and work most of the day, oftentimes I feel sleepy, especially when I am not busy. This was one of the reasons why I took to reading this blessed book, which keeps me awake, as I become so interested in reading it that I do not think of the time. People notice that I am a changed man; that I have a good word for every one. I am sorry I cannot give all the details. They would fill a book. I have overcome a rash in two days for my twelve-year-old daughter. Toothache, stomach trouble, and rheumatism, which I had for years, have also been healed.
Last January, while working in the basement, I bumped my kneecap against an iron obstruction, which stunned me for a moment. Fear tried to creep in. I held on tightly so as not to fall, and the "scientific statement of being," which is found on page 468 of Science and Health, came to my thought. As there is no sensation in matter, I relied on divine power to raise me up, which it did immediately. This happened at ten o'clock on a Saturday morning. I told my family not to worry, as I was pleased to go through this experience and to prove the availability of the divine healing power. I looked at my swollen, wounded knee, yet there was not one drop of blood. I continued my work for three more hours until I had completed it. Then I retired for a little rest. I did not lose one minute's time from my work. My knee bothered me just a little when I went up and down the stairs. As I had to do my morning's work and tend to the furnace on Sunday, I had to work fast to get to church on time. I have succeeded in attending regularly, rain or shine, in plenty of time. So this Sunday morning I went to church with my young daughter. Hurrying along I forgot the wounded knee. While the service was going on I felt the knee, but the soreness was gone. In a week's time it was completely healed.
My wife is not a scholar, not knowing how to read or write; but she listens to my reading and explanation. All of the family of eight are the picture of health; and even though some of the children do not understand Christian Science at present, still none have been sick or needed medicine for over three years.
My testimony will not be complete until I tell of my surprise to know I have gained thirty pounds. I am as active as a boy of twenty years of age; and my work of almost eighteen hours a day seems just like play. For these and many other blessings, I am very thankful to God, to Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, and to our beloved Leader, who discovered Christian Science for us, which is blessing the whole world.
