Before I knew anything of Christian Science my health...

Before I knew anything of Christian Science my health was very unsatisfactory. I was very anaemic, and continually in a state of being run down. For about eight months I had been laid up, unable to walk, on account of knee trouble, the result of a fall. This was variously diagnosed by three doctors as due to rheumatism, gout, and water on the knee. I had just returned from consulting a London specialist, who gave me no hope of walking freely for some months to come.

Then a friend told me of Christian Science. I wrote at once to borrow the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and asked for treatment. Before I had read many pages I knew that this book contained what I needed,—the truth, of which Jesus spoke when he said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free;" and I read every possible minute. Bandages, medicines, and lotions were discarded, and I started walking at once. For about three days the knees ached and swelled worse than ever; but I persevered, and within a week they were healed, as was another ailment which had troubled me from childhood. This was twenty-five years ago. Before my healing I was told that I would always have to be careful and not do too much walking. Instead of this being the case, I have been able to walk as much as twenty-nine miles in a day with no ill effects whatever; whereas before the accident three or four miles were all I could manage at a time.

Some years ago, I became conscious of a slightly painful sensation in the thumb, but thought nothing of it. In a few days nearly the whole of the end joint became solidly black, and the pain was extreme. Then I left home for London, for I found my own fears were quite as much as I could deal with. I also asked another practitioner to help me, for very soon every vein in the arm was inflamed up to the shoulder, and a large lump came in the bend of the elbow. For about a week I did not go to bed, and often spent hours of the night pacing up and down the room in agony. At the end of this time the condition began to yield. A friend who has had a great deal of experience as matron of a large hospital, and who saw me several times during this experience, assured me that under medical treatment I would certainly have lost the thumb altogether; instead of which it was completely healed. This I had known pretty well all the time; and it was the overcoming of this haunting fear, almost more than the destruction of the pain, that was such a tremendous help when it was all over.
