Empty and groundless optimism in the face of grave...

Empty and groundless optimism in the face of grave conditions of finance or of health is not the teaching of Christian Science. The Golden Rule is the acknowledged basis of conduct in Christian Science, and the love and justice of God are the foundation of right conduct. Christian behavior on the part of all men would result in right conditions for all workers; and the farmer, as well as all others, would be able to buy and sell at a right price. Christian Science teaches that obedience to God, who, John says, is Love, would rule out greed, injustice, poverty, discouragement, and all untoward conditions. Mere optimism cannot destroy fear and give just reward to the faithful worker. We shall never do right until we think aright, or pay our neighbor for the product of his work as we would be paid for our work, until we learn to love him as we do ourselves. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says (p. 448), "It is Christian Science to do right, and nothing short of right-doing has any claim to the name." It is not to buy at a loss to the farmer or to any other man, or to sell him goods at undue profit. When all men get together on the love-basis of equal rights for all, then things will be right. We need to obey God. On page 340 of Science and Health one may read, "One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, 'Love thy neighbor as thyself;' annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry,—whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed."
