For twelve years I was a semi-invalid, suffering from chronic nephritis. Three doctors had diagnosed my case as incurable; but, by constantly taking medicine and living on a very strict diet, they said, it could be controlled. I frequently had acute attacks, when my condition became very much worse. I could not go anywhere, on account of heart attacks. Every organ of my body was disturbed by the disease.
In 1909, during one of these acute attacks, I tried Christian Science. A practitioner treated me for five weeks; I began to improve mentally after the first treatment. I read and studied constantly during this period; and I became so interested in what I read about God and His promises in the Bible that I did not even think to talk about my body. During these treatments many things which I had not mentioned to the practitioner were healed. A growth on the left side, which had been there many years and was very sore and painful, disappeared; I left off my glasses, which I had worn for several years on account of terrible headaches. I do not know when I left them off; I simply forgot to put them on; and when I did think of them I did not need them. At last, all my troubles were gone; and I was greatly regenerated physically and mentally. None of these discords have ever returned. At first, I was afraid that they might come back; but when I understood that ignorance of God had caused my troubles, I knew that I could never return to the same condition, because I was no longer ignorant.
Words are inadequate to express my gratitude for this great truth which has been given to us. I am grateful for the physical freedom which I enjoy, and more than all else for the understanding of God and man that I have gained.
