About fourteen years ago I investigated Christian Science...
About fourteen years ago I investigated Christian Science for physical help, and was healed of a severe attack of rheumatism after reading for a few hours "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Then followed many physical healings. Although dissatisfied with the church of which I was a member for a number of years, yet I hesitated somewhat in making my decision in joining a Church of Christ, Scientist. One day, while walking through my place of business, the words of Luke came to me like a flash: "Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached." I was also led a number of times to page 242 of the textbook, "There is but one way to heaven, harmony, and Christ in divine Science shows us this way. It is to know no other reality—to have no other consciousness of life—than good, God and His reflection, and to rise superior to the so-called pain and pleasure of the senses." After these experiences there was no more doubt or hesitancy in making my decision. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and also in a branch church, and grateful for the privilege of class instruction.
One morning as I went to work, I took with me the words on page 209 of Science and Health, "Spiritual sense is a conscious, constant capacity to understand God." I was holding these words in thought while trying to get a piece of ice from the bottom of a barrel containing two one-hundred-pound pieces, when the upper piece, which was lodged on top of the barrel, slipped off and caught my forefinger. I felt a tingling sensation in the finger for a short time, but suffered no pain in it whatever, as usually is the case on getting a blow on the finger tips. I closed my eyes for a moment; and on opening them I discovered quite a scar above the nail, about one-fourth of an inch long, the wound having been instantoneously and perfectly healed.
I have also had demonstrations in business for which I am very grateful; but I am even more grateful for the understanding of God which I have gained and am gaining through the study of Christian Science.
