[Written for the Sentinel]

Assurance

'Tis good to know that Thou art close beside me,
However dark the way to sight appear;
'Tis good to know that Thy right hand doth guide me
Through days of seeming pain and nights of fear.

'Tis good to climb the mount at daylight's dawning,
When the sweet promise of the day unfolds,
And, in the vision of unsullied morning,
Claim the fulfillment which Thy promise holds.

'Tis good, at eve, to rest within Thy garden,
For there Thou walkest when the world's asleep:
There Truth stands at the gate, a flaming warden,
And peace abides within the pleasance deep.

'Tis good to know that Thou art close beside me,
Upon the mount, or in the garden fair;
'Tis good to know that Thy right hand doth guide me
Through heaven or hell; for Thou art everywhere!
