Deliverance

The world is crying out for deliverance. What a pressure of sin and sickness is upon it; what a sense of unrest and unhappiness! It is all very puzzling to the generality of mankind; and so it will continue to appear, until men become enlightened—spiritually enlightened—through Christian Science, which to-day is exercising its beneficent influence wherever its message is received and understood, delivering the sinning and the sick from the shackles which false material sense has forged upon them.

Deliverance comes as one understands and demonstrates the power of good over the false belief of evil. Imperfectly defined as God's nature was to the Hebrew race before Christ Jesus gave his message to the world, still there were those among them who had an extraordinarily keen appreciation of God's goodness, and who believed that not only was He able to, but that He actually did deliver mankind from the difficulties and distresses of human existence. "Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler," run the third and fourth verses of the ninety-first psalm. And in the one hundred and seventh psalm the words occur: "He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions,"—both testifying to the deep and protecting faith possessed by the religious seers of the psalmist's day.

Then in the fullness of time Christ Jesus came with his wonderful message of deliverance. We see him in the synagogue at Nazareth on the Sabbath day opening "the book of the prophet Esaias" at "the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach ... deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.... And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears." The Christ was to be revealed by him to the world as never before, as the impersonal spiritual idea or Truth, to heal and deliver it from all its woes.
