Words are inadequate to express my gratitude for the many benefits derived from the study and application of Christian Science, which came to me when I was in great physical as well as spiritual need. I had been a member of a church for a number of years, but failed to derive any spiritual benefit therefrom. Oftentimes after attending the church service, I would return home heavy-hearted and discontented. Then I would take an inventory of my own consciousness, thinking perhaps therein lay the error. I was honest with myself and with God, and felt that I could not conscientiously affiliate longer. I continued to study the Bible, committing to memory many passages that appealed to me. In my study I came to the passage in Ezekiel: "A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them."

After reading these verses a sense of peace filled my entire being, pervaded my entire surroundings. I knew I had found that for which I had been thirsting. What a wonderful awakening this was to me, and what a wonderful promise it held out! The turbulent waters of unrest that had almost engulfed me were receding, and I was being lifted up to a higher, a more peaceful plane of existence. During this time a Christian Scientist roomed in my home. I did not know anything of Christian Science, and had never given it a thought before she came; but her beautiful Christian life greatly appealed to me. She was so entirely different from any one whom I had ever known. There was always a sense of peace and restfulness in my association with her. Frequently, I read her Christian Science books and other Christian Science literature which she kindly offered me; but I did not understand them, consequently did not get much that I could apply to my daily problems. However, the seed of this wonderful truth, as given to us by Mary Baker Eddy, had been sown in my consciousness, even though I was not aware of it. Later, after she had gone from our town, I had a floating kidney. For about four months I was almost wild with the severe pain this caused me, necessitating me to wear a very tight corset, oftentimes sleeping in it. My physician did what he could for me, but there seemed to be no relief. Another physician was called in consultation, and he advised an operation, which I told my husband I would not submit to; besides, I was going to quit the medical treatment.

One day I found some Christian Science Sentinels this friend had given me, which I had put away, expecting at some convenient time to read them. After reading a short time I was perfectly free from pain. The sense of fear suggested to me, however, that this suffering would return; but I continued to read, and each day was better and happier. I was fully convinced that this was the truth Christ Jesus had taught and demonstrated. I then purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and began an earnest study of Christian Science.
