With a deep sense of gratitude I send these lines, hoping they may help others in the same way that the testimonies I have read in the Christian Science publications have helped me. Until November, 1917, I was a confirmed atheist. I was also suffering from incurable, chronic stomach trouble of over thirty years' standing. To overcome this trouble I used every possible remedy,—dieting, electricity, will-power, physical exercise, medicine, and internal baths. I had also become very nervous, and had many other physical ills.
When at this time Christian Science was brought to my notice, without even investigating I met it with skepticism. When the stomach trouble became very acute, however, I gave my wife permission to telegraph a Christian Science practitioner for absent treatment. I did this to please her, and was thinking: Go and telegraph, but to-morrow I shall be able to tell you that Christian Science could do nothing for me. Then the unexpected happened. The day after the telegram was sent natural action was restored, something that had not occurred during many previous years. A single Christian Science absent treatment had cured the case. No pen can describe the happiness I felt then, and still feel, for being liberated from the bondage of suffering.
I then decided to learn something about the power that had cured me. I purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and read it eagerly. Unfortunately, I read it as I had been reading the Bible and other literature in the past. In consequence, I did not get any light from the book. My worldly mindedness brought its own punishment in the form of the old complaint returning, after about six months from the date of the first healing. I immediately went back to the use of drugs and other material remedies; but the condition continued to grow worse and worse. As a last resort, I again turned to Christian Science for help. The practitioner, I am grateful to say, refused to treat me, stating that unless I would give up the use of drugs and rely entirely on divine Mind, she would not take the case. Of course, at that state of my growth in understanding, which was very small, I was furious; mortal sense rebelled, and I intended to ask no more help from Christian Science. When my condition grew still worse, however, I finally consented to rely entirely on Christian Science; and within two weeks I was perfectly cured. It is now over three years and eight months since this last healing took place. Since then I have been perfectly well; and am grateful to say that most of the other troubles I used to be subject to have disappeared, as the result of work done by Christian Science practitioners, and as the result of my efforts to study Christian Science with a childlike faith.
